Meet our team: Manager Wellsite and Operations Geology

Lene Thorstensen, Manager of Wellsite and Operations Geology at AGR, is preparing to attend the IADC Geothermal Drilling Conference & Exhibition in Vienna, held between March 25-26. Lene and her team of wellsite and operations geologists bring extensive expertise to geothermal projects, including their recent involvement in Europe’s largest geothermal heating plant—the Aarhus Geothermal Project in Denmark. We sat down with Lene to learn more about her role, her team’s wellsite and operations geology expertise, and what it takes to support geothermal developments.

What do you do at AGR?

Together with my colleagues from the Wellsite and Operations Geology team, we deliver comprehensive operations geology expert support that enhances operational efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness for our clients. Together with our associates, we’re a team of 40 wellsite experts delivering wellsite and operations geology expertise.

How long have you worked in the energy industry?

I started in the energy industry in 2011, after serving seven years in the navy. My career began as a data operator and sample catcher, and in 2014, I moved into a wellsite geologist role.

What inspired you to go into this field?

Simple—Geology Rocks! 🪨 Geology is the study of Earth’s composition and how it changes over time, spanning everything from the planet’s core to its highest peaks. While the field is vast, offshore work has always intrigued me. Drilling may be “just a hole in the ground,” but the complexity behind it is what makes it so fascinating!

What excites you most about the energy transition?

Discovering new ways for my team to contribute to the lower carbon world and adapt as the industry evolves.

Do you have a favorite memory at AGR?

Since our geologists are based across different countries and cities, my favorite moments are when we all come together. Everyone has unique backgrounds, interests, and hobbies, but every gathering turns into a great memory.
