Client: Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC)
Work executed: 2024-2025
Location: East China Sea
Drilling unit used: West Capella dual derrick drillship, offshore South Korea
AGR was entrusted with providing technical staffing and operational expertise for Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC) during the drilling of their vertical exploration gas well, Daewang Gorae-1, a standalone deepwater drilling campaign located in the East China Sea, offshore South Korea.
This high-profile campaign, executed in water depths of approximately 1,250 meters MSL, lasted 41 days and was conducted using Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) technology aboard the West Capella dual derrick drillship.

Our Processes
Overcoming the challenges of a standalone exploration well
One of the primary challenges in standalone deepwater exploration projects is assembling a team with the specialised technical skills required to minimise the learning curve and operational inefficiencies, thereby avoiding costly overruns.
With no preceding wells to provide operational learnings, we recognised the importance of deploying a team that could seamlessly integrate into the project and hit the ground running.
To achieve this, AGR Consultancy recruiters strategically sourced drilling supervisors who had prior experience working on the West Capella rig. This familiarity with the rig’s systems, operational processes, and MPD technology ensured that the team could rapidly adapt to the project’s specific requirements, significantly reducing onboarding time and enhancing overall efficiency. This proactive approach helped to mitigate risks associated with non-productive time (NPT), allowing the campaign to progress smoothly and cost-effectively.
Our expertise in technical staffing and competency assessment
Beyond simply sourcing personnel, our global network and rigorous competency assessment process played a pivotal role in assembling a highly skilled and experienced team. By leveraging its well-established consultant database, AGR Consultancy recruiters were able to identify and mobilise deepwater drilling specialists who met KNOC’s exacting standards for both deepwater operations and MPD.
Every consultant placed by us underwent a comprehensive competency assessment, ensuring that they possessed not only the technical expertise but also the ability to perform under the challenging conditions of a remote, high-pressure drilling campaign.

Client challenges and our solutions
1. Sourcing deepwater & MPD-experienced personnel
KNOC required highly skilled temporary contract professionals with proven experience in deepwater projects and MPD technology. The client benefitted from our extensive industry network and expertise in deepwater well management enabling the rapid identification and placement of qualified professionals who had previous experience working in similar conditions.
2. Commitment to a complex, high-stakes assignment
The campaign required specialists who could commit to an extended 10+ week assignment, including pre-campaign planning onshore in Korea followed by a 40-day offshore
operation – all while navigating the complexities of drilling during the Christmas and New Year period. Our consultants demonstrated exceptional adaptability and commitment, ensuring that project timelines remained on track despite the challenges of the holiday season.
3. Mobilisation, work permits & logistical coordination
Beyond technical expertise, KNOC relied on us to manage the visa and travel logistics necessary for mobilising personnel into Korea. We efficiently secured all work permits, travel arrangements, and local compliance requirements, ensuring that specialists arrived fully prepared and on schedule to support the operation.
Delivering value & operational success
Our deep understanding of deepwater well management, its ability to deploy highly skilled personnel, and its proven competency assessment process were critical factors in the success of the Daewang Gorae-1 project. By minimising operational learning curves, providing an expert team familiar with the West Capella rig, and ensuring a seamless mobilisation process, we helped KNOC execute a safe, efficient, and technically successful drilling campaign in one of the most complex deepwater environments in the East China Sea.
This project once again highlighted AGR’s ability to provide end-to-end Well Management support, from technical staffing and training to logistics coordination and operational execution, reinforcing its reputation as a trusted partner for deepwater exploration projects worldwide.
