For Henrik Garmannslund, recruitment is all about people and finding the right connection. Based in Techconsult’s Bergen team, he thrives on the fast pace of recruitment, getting to know new clients and candidates, and matching the right technical expertise with the right opportunity in energy and oceans.

Our consultancy advisers connect clients across the energy and marine industries with experienced technical specialists and consultants. Meet Henrik from our Techconsult team (part of AGR Consultancy) in Bergen, and learn more about his work in technical recruitment, specialist resourcing and contract hire.

1. Give us a glimpse into your day-to-day life at Techconsult. What keeps you on your toes in your work?

I usually start my day by checking my emails, client requests and deadlines to get a clear overview, and then plan my priorities for the day. But of course, the day rarely turns out exactly as planned!

My days usually mix new client requests, conversations with consultants, candidates, and clients, and finding the right people for the technical roles and projects I’m working on.

The pace keeps me on my toes. A new specialist resourcing request can suddenly come in with a tight deadline, requiring a quick shift in focus and a fast response. I really enjoy the dynamic environment and the fact that you never quite know what the day will bring.

2. What drew you to recruitment and what keeps you passionate about it?

What initially drew me to technical recruitment was the opportunity to work with people. I’m naturally social and genuinely enjoy getting to know new people, hearing about their experiences and understanding what motivates them.

What keeps me passionate is the opportunity to connect the right people with the right opportunities. I enjoy understanding both the client’s needs and what a consultant or candidate is looking for, and finding the connection between the two. When you make the right match, you create value for both the individual and the company. That feeling of creating value is what I find most rewarding about recruitment.

3. Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?

One of the things I find particularly exciting at the moment is working with requests from new clients. I really enjoy getting to know their business, understanding their specialist resourcing needs and identifying the right profiles for their projects.

I’m motivated by new challenges and the opportunity to learn along the way. Working with new clients means stepping into something unfamiliar, understanding what they need and finding the best approach to deliver. Turning those insights into successful contract hires and placements is both challenging and rewarding.

4. Based on your experience, what do you see as the biggest challenges facing energy talent management and how can recruiters be more agile in managing workforce?

I think one of the biggest challenges is that the energy and marine industries are evolving quickly, which also means that the skills and technical profiles our clients need are constantly changing. At the same time, competition for experienced professionals remains strong, making it increasingly important to identify and attract the right talent.

To stay agile, recruiters need to be proactive and adaptable in how they approach the market. It’s important to look beyond an exact match and also consider transferable skills, potential and the ability to learn and adapt. Building strong relationships with consultants, candidates and clients, and understanding future workforce and specialist resourcing needs early on, allows us to respond quickly when new opportunities arise.

5. What’s your favourite part about working with people?

My favourite part about working with people is getting to know them and learning from their experiences. Every person has a unique background, perspective and way of approaching challenges, and I find that interesting and inspiring.

I also value the opportunity to collaborate with different people and learn from their viewpoints. Bringing together different perspectives often leads to better ideas and stronger solutions, and that’s something I enjoy both in technical recruitment and in teamwork.

6. Beyond work, what keeps you charged?

Outside of work, I really enjoy spending time with friends and family. I’m a very social person, and being surrounded by good people is definitely what gives me the most energy and helps me recharge.

I also like to stay active in my free time. I enjoy strength training and going on hikes, whether it’s in the mountains or in the forest. And as a big football enthusiast, I’m always happy to watch a good football match!
