As we head to St Andrews for the OEUK Decommissioning Conference 24 – 26 November, we’re shining a light on our Marine, Subsea & Survey team — the people behind our marine operations expertise. We’ll talk to Karl Kristian Hasselø who will be on site to discuss vessel-based decommissioning and wellhead severance solutions, and how smart marine planning and integrated decommissioning operations can make late-life field management safer and more cost-efficient.
What is your position and daily tasks?
I’m the Marine Business Development and Project Manager. My role involves sales and development of new products, primarily within AGR marine and survey solutions. A typical day for me includes responding to tenders, setting up commercial estimates, and chasing new opportunities. I also focus on building and maintaining client relationships and coming up with great ideas – basically, all the fun stuff!
Outside of work, my main task is training my 8-year-old son’s soccer team, which takes about the same number of hours as my role at AGR.
What drew you to energy industry and what keeps you passionate about it?
The dream of becoming a Master Mariner initially drew me in. I’ve always been fascinated by the complexity and volatility of the energy industry — there’s never a dull moment, always new challenges and tasks to tackle. What truly keeps me passionate are the people: performance-driven, dedicated, and inspiring to work with.
Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?
Right now, I’m exploring new business development opportunities, expanding our reach, and shaping new strategic directions to ensure our clients continue trusting AGR as their end-to-end solutions’ provider across the life-cycle. News will soon be launched!:)
In your role, what do you see as the biggest challenges facing the Decommissioning industry in the North Sea and how can these be effectively addressed to deliver efficient projects?
Decommissioning is inherently about winding down rather than building up, which means the work doesn’t directly create value. With the high-cost levels in the marine industry, making decommissioning sustainable is a real challenge.
At AGR, we believe we’re on the right path by offering robust yet simple solutions at a fair price. By trading risk for flexibility, we’re able to deliver highly competitive vessel-based decommissioning solutions to our clients.
Beyond the work, what’s your favourite part about being part of the AGR marine team? Any fun team moments you’d like to share?
The cliché “One team – One Purpose” really rings true for our marine team. It’s a dream to work with such a knowledgeable and experienced group. We genuinely enjoy being at work—and we carry that same energy whether we’re at the pub or skiing in the mountains. We even manage to have fun without talking about vessels!
